Music & Other Stuff

The music that is played with the button at the bottom left corner of the screen is the Mozart's 20th Piano Concerto. It has total three movements and roughly 30 minutes of run time. At here, it starts from the second movement and loops through the piece.

This piano concerto is first of the only two piano concertos written in a minor key by the composer. The other one is his 24th piano concerto, which is very famous of its third movement having a contagious excitement. Ludwig van Beethoven had expressed his appreciation of this piece and had wrote a Cadenze for it.

This version was played by French pianist Robert Casadesus, George Szell(Conductor) with Cleveland Orchestra on 10 Novembre, 1956. The performer took an unusal approch to the middle part of the second movement using a more serious tempo, resulting in a more alertive feeling. The record has an appearant sense of age, which is equitable considering this is from more than 60 years ago. I also recommend the interpretations of Friedrich Gulda with Claudio Abbado, and the version with Maria João Pires, where they have taken a more gradual tempo.

This model was created similar to the previous one with model described by parameterized mathematical surfaces. But the 3D lift of the keys are detected by boundary operator acting on the orginal keyboard image.

By displace part of spine of the book, not only made the book lost its functionality, but one also obtaines a naturally hyperbolic shaped book. Although with the knowledge in this textbook, a topologist can already spot its difference.

Putting initials of my name on a the septic surface with number of nodes being the known largest is a genuinely fun experience, especially with an extra implication. Probably a good place to start calculateing a Zariski homology.

Hopf Fibration

How can you put circles inside a 3-sphere with maximum symmetry(i.e. not able to distinguish each, no circle is special)? Hopf fibration shows that it is equivalent to maximum symmetric point sets on a 2-sphere. Here is a demonstration of vertices on a cube.

With polarization of media nowdays, lots of people are being subconsciously brought to more extreme side, becoming "diode", causing an alarming extent of division with severe potential outcome. That makes the awareness of such issue more crucial.

The Design

Overview

The website, as one probably had already figured, has not taken the tranditional website approch. In fact, its code is completely hand-written by me during a consecutive 5 days, in toal about 40 hours. I'm sort of glad it hasn't fall apart with so many features added into it.

The home page has split into four sections, with middle two as entrance to other pages. Layout was designed simple to avoid information overload, and is also comptible with multiple aspect ratios. The three movable quadrilaterals combine into appropriate shapes to balance the negative space the same time infuse some vitality into the website. The motion of these shapes are deigned to be non-linear to make them felt less stiff.

The Colouring

Have you noticed the gradient in the quadrilaterals' orange-yellow colour? It was inspired by the logo of the Berliner Philharmoniker, with its purity and contrast with the black negative space around it, inducing a strong modern feeling.

Gradient was not the only feature quadrilateral graphics possess. Their edge was smoothed out by a more darkened lucent, which provides them feeling of physical thickness instead of just being plain 2D shapes.

The negative space aren't also purely black. It was combined with a very light secondary colour, Therefore making them noticible that some are more red, some are more green-ish, and the page where it is more purply felt. These made the page transition less bland, and subconsciously made pages' vertical relation more apparent

Font

The font is majoritively STXihei, like one could see at most of titles, which is again used to imitate the sense of modern. Calibri is used for text paragraphs, as its appearance is very common, and also to avoid fatigue of having too much STXihei. It is also worth mentioning that the selecting buttons uses Corbel as its font, which is intended to distinguish it from other elements of the site.

Trivia

The gallery page in this site, despite being horizontally ordered, is scrollable. The horizontal scrollbar was implemented here by applying two rotations to a vertical scrollbar to achieve such functionaility
